Richard Driehaus

Richard Herman Driehaus was one of the most influential people in mutual fund investing. He founded Driehaus Securities in 1979 and Driehaus Capital Management in 1982. He was born and raised in Brainerd neighborhood on Chicago’s southwest side, to a family of modest means. He became one of the top financiers and philanthropist in Chicago.

He, and the Driehaus Foundation, engaged in philanthropy, especially historic preservation, classical architecture, collecting, the arts, and education. The Driehaus Museum is an exceptional mansion restored inside and out to the Guilded Age and a decorative arts. He initiated the Richard H. Driehaus Prize for Architecture. Even though he was not an architect, he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award 2015 from American Institute of Architects. He was also honored with the Order of Lincoln Award in 2017, the highest honor bestowed by the State of Illinois.

Bruce Graham was a famous Chicago architect who designed buildings all over the world. He was born in Colombia, South America to Canadian and Peruvian parents and grew up in Puerto Rico. He came to Chicago and apprenticed for Holabird and Root architects; most of his career was at Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (SOM) where he and structural engineer, Fazlur Khan were an outstanding team. In Chicago they built the Sears Tower (Willis Tower) and the John Hancock Building (875 N. Michigan Avenue). He was one of the contributors to the Chicago 21 plan of 1973, an extension of the Burnham Plan of Chicago. He was also a Pew Fellow.

Ron Salazar was an architect who worked for the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. He helped coordinate several of Chicago’s biggest events including: Taste of Chicago, Maxwell Street Market, and Christkindlmarket, exhibitions and events at Daley Plaza. He was born in Manila and was very involved with Filipino arts, history, and cultural institutions in Chicago. This included the Phiippine-American Cultural Foundation, the Filipino American Historical Society, community centers and theater groups.

Fazlur Rahman Khan was a famous structural engineer who designed the world’s tallest buildings. He worked in Chicago at Skidmore, Owings, and Merril (SOM) and collaborated on the Sears Tower (1973) and the John Hancock Building (1969) with architect Bruce Graham. His innovations in bracing systems and the bundled tube design ushered in a new era of supertall buildings. He is considered the “Einstein of Structural Engineering.” He won a Fullbright Scholarship to pursue his studies in the United States. In 1967 he became a US Citizen.
