Harold A. Bezazian Way

Harold Arsene Bezazian was born and raised in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood to Armenian immigrant parents. He was a journalist for the Chicago Times and publicity manager for the Chicago Auto Club. Following the attach on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the military to fight in WWII. He died, while leading a rescue mission in the Philippines.

The Harold Bezazian Branch of the Chicago Public Library was dedicated in 1957 as a memorial from his father.

Clifton Lewis Way

Clifton Lewis was an officer with the 15th District Tactical Team. He was killed during a robbery at a convenience store where he was working security detail. Four days earlier he and his girlfriend got engaged. Clifton Lewis lived and worked in the Austin neighborhood.

Jadwiga Kaczynska Way

Jadwiga Kaczynska was a prominent literary scholar at the National Academy of Sciences in Poland. She was a nurse during WWII and the Geman occupation of Poland. After the war she was a member of the Polish Teachers Union and involved in the Solidarity movement. Her son, Lech Kaczynki, became the fourth President of the Republic of Poland, and appointed his twin, Jarosław, as Prime Minister. Lech and his wife died in plane crash in Russia.

Chuck Renslow Way

Chuck Renslow was an icon in the LGBTQ community and a activist. He opened some of Chicago’s first openly gay businesses; he is known worldwide as the founder of International Mr. Leather competition and the Leather Archives and Museum. In the 1960s he opened one of the first leather bars in the world and published GayLife magazine. He is featured in the Chicago Boystown LGBTQ Hall of Fame and also in New York.

Jeanne Uzdawinis Way

Jeanne Marie Uzdawinis was the co-owner of Cafe Selmarie in the Lincoln Square neighborhood. She and Birgit Kobayashi were neighbors on Giddings Street who started the European styled cafe in 1983. The Cafe began as a bakery featuring what became Jeanne’s famous hazelnut cheesecake. It has grown in size and popularity with Lincoln Square itself, and is now a full restaurant. Cafe Selmarie moved to the Lincoln Square Plaza in 1999 Cafe Selmarie celebrated 35 years in business in 2018.

Jeanne grew up in Indianapolis and came to Chicago to study dance at Columbia College.

Henry Coleman and his brother George started the Coleman Barbecue restaurant to bring real southern cooking to Chicago. In the beginning, Henry worked full-time at Brach’s Candy Company in addition to the restaurant. They grew the single location into 4 restaurants in Austin and Maywood, only two still remain. Henry’s children have kept the restaurant going.

Gus was born in Greece, they moved to Edgewater in 1964.

Charles J. Barango Way

Charles Barango was a 14-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department who received several awards recognitions for his work and was a member of the 5th District tactical unit. He appeared in televisions dramas which were set and filmed in Chicago, including “Chicago Fire” and a technical consultant to “Chicago P.D.”

In 2016, Officer Barango was killed in a motorcycle accident the day before returning to active duty following surgery and treatment for a brain tumor.

Seymour F. Simon was the Chief Justice on the Illinois Supreme Court, former Cook County Board President, and former Alderman of the 40th Ward. He became known for his dissenting opinions in court, and against Mayor and the party line. Roslyn started her own corporate gifts business after the death of her first husband. She is also a was a former Radio City Music Hall Rockette and competed in the Miss America Pagent as Miss Philadelphia.

Irv Kupcinet wrote a daily column for the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper. “Kups Column” began in 1943 for the Chicago Daily Times, which became the Chicago Sun and then The Chicago Sun-Times in 1948. He interviewed celebrities in the newspaper and for his Saturday television show.

Terrence Collins was a retired Battalion Chief in the Chicago Fire Department. He had a 37-year career as a firefighter. He was always willing be of service and to help someone in need. He was awarded the highest honor awarded by the City of Chicago, the Lambert Tree Medal in 1981 for saving the lives of two children from a fire.
